The 2017 Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference writing competitions for Ten Spurs and book manuscripts have their deadline set at 11:59 p.m. CST May 1. Your complete entry must be received and all registration and contest fees must be paid by the deadline.
Again this year, the contest is accepting unpublished works in the personal essay and reported narrative categories; these entries will undergo a two-tiered judging that will first consider them for group workshop placement and then for selection as one of 10 works that will go into our 2018 edition of Ten Spurs. Prize money will be awarded to the first, second and third place personal essays and the first, second and third place reported narratives. An additional four works will be announced for inclusion in Ten Spurs.
The Mayborn also is accepting entries into its book manuscript category. These entries also undergo a two-tiered judging that will first consider them for group workshop placement and then for selection for first, second or third place honors (which receive cash prizes) and membership in the Mayborn's Authors Guild. A provisional publishing contract with UNT Press is also available to the first place book manuscript winner.
Entries received after the deadline may be considered for placement in a group writing workshop; however, they will be ineligible for the contests and prize money.
All entries that are not selected for a group workshop will be paired up with one of the Mayborn's super alumni to have a one-on-one, 15- to 30-minute coaching session filled with tips and guidance about their works.
For those interested in submitting their work for the Mayborn's Biography Fellowship with James McGrath Morris, that deadline remains 11:59 p.m. CST May 12.
